How do you spend your weekends?
As we were driving down the freeway at 7am one Sunday on a 400km round trip for our son’s sport training I thought about all the sport supporting parents who also run their own businesses. I began wondering if they show the same dedication to their business as they do to their child’s sports.
Almost every weekend you’ll find dedicated parents dragging themselves from their beds, getting their kids in the car and heading off for a weekend dedicated to their children’s sports. In mid winter you’ll find some rugged up against the mid winter cold cheering the team on with their hands wrapped around a hot cuppa trying to keep warm. And in summer they’ll be slathering on sunscreen and seeking any shade spot just to try and stay cool. Some parents like myself are leaving home earlier than on a work day to attend training or a tournament hundreds of kilometres away.
What do you invest in your child’s sport?
We invest our emotions, time, energy and our money into our children’s sport.
- We seek out top coaches to train our children in their sport.
- We invest money in equipment and training.
- We turn up in all weathers at anytime of the day or night to support our kids.
Why do you invest in your child’s sport?
What is it about parents like us that we have such dedication to our children’s sport?
- Is it to please our child?
- maybe it’s our own competitive nature being expressed through our child?
- or is it because we know the importance of sport to our child’s physical, mental and emotional resilience?
Are you dedicated to your business in the same way you are to your child’s sport?
Over the years of being in business and mentoring business people I’ve noticed it’s the ones who know the deeper purpose their business has in their lives are the ones who are truly dedicated to it. They’re the ones who have a “whatever it takes” attitude in their life. They stretch their comfort zones and they train themselves in business knowledge & personal growth to ensure their businesses thrive.
I know if you’re only in business to make money your business won’t last through the challenges along the way. There are much easier ways to get money than being an entrepreneur.
If you know the deeper purpose of your business you’ll be truly dedicated to it
How would you invest in yourself?
Would you get up early and read that business book that’s been gathering dust on your bedside table? Would you set aside time to write that book or start that blog? Is there a course you’ve been wanting to take but keep putting it off because you can’t justify it financially or time wise? It’s time to invest in yourself if you want your business to thrive.
What support team would you invest in to grow your business?
In the early days you probably had to do it all by yourself, but as your business grows you know you physically and mentally can’t do it all by yourself. Just as an athlete is supported by coaches, trainers, mindset mentors and physios your business needs a support team too. You need to create a support team of specialists to help you grow your business. Even in mid size businesses the days of the marketing department and the finance officer are gone. Small business owners are now hiring specialists when needed. By are using your time and resources to focus on core tasks and R & D for your business – you’ll be working on your business instead of in your business.
Business and personal development Coaches can be an excellent source of knowledge and accountability helping you focus on growing yourself and your business.
How would you build your physical, mental and emotional resilience?
Athletes train themselves in all 3 areas to reach beyond their limits. To excel Entrepreneurs need to do the same. Regular physical exercise, even a daily 20 minute walk can help you boost your physical stamina and improves your mental and emotional wellbeing.
Activities such as meditation, mindfulness and conscious breathing help create mental and emotional clarity. These techniques help to reduce stress and build your focus. Taking time out for self care is essential if you are to grow your business to it’s full potential.
Whatever it takes
I love seeing business people take on the “whatever it takes” philosophy. To realise if you want to grow your business to its full potential you need to left go of your resistance and bust some comfort zones. It’s time to delve deep and release your fears, especially the fear of others people’s opinions; these thoughts can hobble your business. By dedicating yourself to creating a positive mindset, to understand yourself and your business you can serve more people.
When you invest in, nurture and grow yourself, your business thrives in return.
